"I wanted to Rub the human face in its own vomit and force it to look in the mirror"
- J.G. Ballard

This is a community for fans of Richey James Edwards, missing lyricist / rhythm guitarist of the Manic Street Preachers.

Feel free to join and post. Browse entry tags / tag your posts. Be respectful to other members. Don't start drama or you'll be banned.

We do not support or promote pro-self-abuse ideals. We do not and will not promote self-harm in any form. We are not pro-ana or any of that crap and will not accept any posts / comments that we think are supportive of such idiocy.

ALTHOUGH, you are free to discuss your own struggles with self-abuse in comments or posts if it somehow relates to Richey (ie someone posts about his issues and you reply to it and use your own as an example for whatever you're trying to say). This is a safe place for self-harm discussion / emotional support.

Early years:
Richey was born in Blackwood, Wales in 1967. Friends with Nicky Wire, James Dean Bradfield, and Sean Moore, Richey originally joined the band as the group's driver, although he was shortly thereafter made a full member. Lacking much ability to play an instrument, Richey mainly contributed by writing lyrics, along with being the mouthpiece for the band, Nicky Wire beside him (collectively known as "The Glamour Twins"). In 1991, Richey famously carved "4REAL" into his left arm (a wound that would require seventeen stitches) during an interview with Steve Lamacq in which Richey felt the seriousness of the band was being greatly doubted.

Richey openly battled issues with self-mutilation, eating disorders, and alcohol abuse. His hospitalizations occasionally caused him to miss live performances with the band. He faced much scrutiny from the press on these issues, some claiming he did it all to gain publicity for the band and increase album sales.

Richey disappeared on February 01, 1995. His car was found two weeks later, parked near the Severn Bridge. It has been suspected that he committed suicide by jumping off the bridge, but no evidence has ever been found to support that theory. There has been no evidence to show he is alive, either. He seemingly disappeared into thin air.

2008 - 2009
On November 23, 2008, Richey's family decided to close his missing person case and declare him legally dead. In early 2009, the band released the album Journal for Plague Lovers which featured a large chunk of Richey's lyrics he'd left to the band before disappearing. Special editions of the album included a small book of Richey's journals from which the lyrics were taken, filled with photographs, painted collages, and stream of consciousness writing.
